Fear of flying
Q. My fiancé and I are spending our honeymoon in the Caribbean and I'm very excited about it. The problem is, I'm scared of flying. I want to have a great honeymoon and I'm really determined to get over this phobia, particularly as it's a long-haul flight. What can I do?
A. Sue Roberts says: A fear of flying is very common and can be rooted in another phobia, such as fear of dying, confined spaces or lack of control. Any one of these can trigger panic in certain situations, in your case it is flying. Bach Flower Remedies (see the website www.bachcentre.com), which are available from health shops, can be useful for mild fear. You can also try a technique called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), a psychological version of acupuncture that involves tapping the body's meridian points with the fi ngertips to deal with emotional issues. In your case, gently tap the bone under the eye with your finger the moment you start to feel panicky. |

Endless guest lists
Q. I have lots of friends I want to invite to my wedding, but my parents insist on inviting all of their friends as well as older relatives. We can't possibly invite everyone, and the guest list is causing arguments between us. Can you suggest ways we can resolve this?
A. Sue Roberts says: Arguments about guest lists are very common, and the best way to resolve them is by communication - listening as well as talking and compromising. Get a neutral family friend involved, if necessary, and get everyone around the table for a discussion. Set some rules: everyone has their say, without interruption. Everyone is allowed to express how they feel and why they believe their point is important. Decide beforehand on the maximum number of guests. After everyone has expressed their opinion, ask if there's a way to accommodate guests who are most important to you - then change the list accordingly. |
